Trimming Your Hedgehog’s Nails

First, you’ll need to gather some supplies. You’ll need a pair of small nail clippers specifically designed for trimming animal nails. You’ll also need a soft towel or cloth to wrap your hedgehog in, as this will help to keep them calm and still.

Next, take a look at your hedgehog’s nails. The nails on the front paws tend to grow fastest, so you may want to focus on those first. The quick, the pink part of the nail, should be relatively short, and the pink part should never be cut.

Once you’ve decided how much needs to be trimmed off, gently wrap your hedgehog in the towel or cloth. This will help to keep them still while you’re working. Use one hand to hold their foot steady, and use the other hand to carefully snip off the tips of their nails.

Using small manicure scissors or nail clippers, carefully snip off the tip of the nail, being careful not to cut too close to the quick (the pink part of the nail). This can be painful for your hedgehog and may cause bleeding. You can trim all of the nails on one paw before moving on to the next, or you can switch it up if your hedgehog starts getting restless.

If you’re not sure how much of the nail to trim, err on the side of caution and only take off a little bit at a time. It’s much easier to go back and trim more if necessary than it is to try and fix a nail that’s been cut too short. With a little practice, you’ll get the hang of it and your hedgehog will be looking spiffy in no time!
