The 2023 Support Grant Recipients
Six years ago, Save The Snakes was founded with a snake conservation vision. We believed that if Save The Snakes could support wildlife conservationists to mitigate human-snake conflict in their own communities, then they could lay the groundwork to protect threatened snake populations in their part of the world. To do this, we implemented the Save The Snakes Support Grant Program.
The purpose of a Save The Snakes Support Grant is to empower passionate, committed people with an early-stage snake conservation vision. We fund individuals, small organizations and community groups that focus on community-based conservation strategies to protect threatened snake populations and mitigate human-snake conflict.
In 2023, Save The Snakes received a large number of proposals for projects from around the world. We are proud to award Support Grants to three incredible snake conservationists: María Elena Barragán-Paladines, Fredrick Ojija, and Tharanga Dasanayake.
Learn more about their important projects:
María Elena Barragán-Paladines – “Preliminary conservation status assessment of the Bushmaster Lachesis acrochorda, in the Chocoan region of Ecuador“
María Elena’s project aims to collect data of the Chocoan Bushmaster and to promote education and conservation efforts in Ecuador.
Fredrick Ojija – “Protecting the endangered Tanzanian Matilda’s Horned Viper“
Fredrick’s project seeks to research and protect the critically endangered Matilda’s horned viper and reduce human-snake conflict in Tanzania.
Tharanga Dasanayake – “Habitat Utilization and Phylogeography of Sri Lankan Green Pit Viper in three climate zones of Sri Lanka”
Tharanga’s project aims to preserve an endemic green pit viper population and its habitat and to promote conservation awareness among students in Sri Lanka.
We wish these recipients success in their projects and support their efforts for snake conservation and education.
